How to Install Blackout Curtains on Sliding Glass Door

Flexible curtain track installed on curved bay window with linen curtains

Hanging curtains isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about light control, privacy, and perceived room height. Yet most people measure wrong, leading to gaps, awkward proportions, or blocked windows. The golden rule? Extend the rod 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) beyond the window frame on each side. This prevents light leakage and makes the window appear larger. Mount the rod 6 inches (15 cm) above the frame—or even up to the ceiling for dramatic effect in rooms with low ceilings. For bay windows or sliding doors, flexible tracks are essential; rigid rods won’t follow the curve. We’ve installed curtains in over 200 homes and found that natural linen works best for diffused light, while blackout linings are ideal for bedrooms. In this guide, we share pro tips on fabric selection, hardware sizing, and avoiding common measuring mistakes—even for tricky architectural features.
